,Objective: To demonstrate the experiential way of heat transfer through convection process
Outcome: Students will learn a way of heat transfer used by people at home
Requirements: A traditional cot having holes
Prerequisites: A conceptual knowledge of processes of heat transfer
Procedure:
Step 1: Students can lie down on a traditional cot having holes preferably during mid afternoon
How do they feel after some time? Hot or cool?
Step 2: Discuss how convection is taking place in order to cool the body. When we lie down on the cot, the air around the body will be hotter than the air closer to the floor creating a thermal gradient and facilitating a continuous convective flow of air that takes away the body heat .
Step 3: Compare sleeping on this cot versus sleeping on a cot with a thick mattress, on a hot day without active cooling. Discuss the difference in terms of heat transfer and trapped heat.
Figure: Sleeping on a cot cools the body through the convection process of heat transfer.
