Outcome

The students will understand the importance of participatory design for users

Requirements

Book, Pen, Pencil, Eraser

Prerequisites

Knowledge of passive design cooling techniques

Procedure

Step 1 : Form pairs of two students each.

Step 2: Students are asked to make a design proposal (in written form with points or through a rough drawing) that addresses the issue of thermal comfort using passive design solution ideas for the other person. The only question they can ask each other at the beginning of this task is: what house structure do you live in? ( eg. building, individual house, etc). Students are not permitted to ask each other anything about their respective contexts at this stage.( 30 mins)

Step 3: Students are again asked to make a design proposal (in written form with points or through a rough drawing) that addresses the issue of thermal comfort using passive design solution ideas for the other. Students are instructed to spend time speaking with each other to understand their partner’s context and consult their partner as they design. ( 45 mins)

Step 5: Students are given time to share their first and second proposal with their partner( 10 mins)

Step 6: Students are asked : What is the difference you notice between your first and second proposal? Which one did your partner prefer? What are your reflections based on this?(10 mins)

Step 6 : The professor emphasises the necessity of co-creating to highlight the necessity of designing/planning in a manner that truly serves people’s contextual needs.
