,Critical analysis of the green building concept. Debate and discuss the future implications of green buildings but on a meta scale. Ponder upon questions like how sustainable are green buildings (office complexes, LEED certified buildings, etc. ).
Objective
To understand the green building economics and greenwashing concept trending in the market.
Outcome
Students will be better positioned and well informed about the green market and green washing that is being done in the name of sustainability and climate action. They would develop a critical perspective which would reflect in their designs and material choices in their future life as an architect.
Requirements
Laptop, internet and powerpoint or presentation techniques
Prerequisites
Suggested list of reading references around green washing and green building rating, fundamental knowledge on Sustainable development approach and practices.
Procedure
Step 1: Unite the class into a few groups and assign one reading to each group.
Step 2: One of the groups can/should take up the green rating system or bodies in India (such as LEED, GRIHA, IGBC) and understand how they assess and process the green rating. Critically analyse one green rated and certified building in India and identify the loopholes in the rating systems.
Step 3: At the end of one week, each group shares their findings and perspectives with others. Case studies and examples to be cited and shared as much as possible rather than theoretical. This will help students to better articulate and ground the concept in relativity.
