Objective

To compare the power consumption of an AC vs a fan.

Outcome

Students will become aware of the injustice between people of differing socio-economic classes caused by the air conditioning usage.

Requirements

None

Prerequisites
  1. A conceptual knowledge of power consumption of a device.
  2. Suitable for 3rd year students of architecture
Procedure

Step 1: Assign a task of finding the power consumption of a typical 1.5 TR, 3-star AC and a ceiling fan to students before they come to the next class.

Step 2: In the next class, estimate the number of ceiling fans which collectively have the same power consumption as that of a typical air conditioner.

Calculations

Step 1: Power Consumption of a 1.5 TR, 3-star split AC = 1650 W

Power Consumption of a typical ceiling fan = 66 W

Step 2: No. of fans which collectively have the same power consumption as that of an AC= $$\frac{\:\text{Power consumption of an AC (W) }}{\:\text{Power consumption of a fan (W)}}$$

= $$\frac{\:\text{1650 }}{\:\text{66}}$$

= 25 fans
