Objective:

To design retrofit solutions of passive cooling by using low cost materials in houses of an informal settlement

Outcome:

Students will be equipped with retrofitting solutions to an existing space. Students will be sensitized to the thermal comfort issues in Informal settlements.

Requirements:

Laptop, selected Informal settlement

Prerequisites:

Identify an Informal settlement, prior visit to the settlement.

This activity/minor project can be integrated along with the housing design studio while visiting and studying Informal settlements.

Procedure:

Step 1 : Students visit an Informal settlement and study and observe 5-6 different houses (of different types, scale, floors, etc.) which have ventilation and thermal stress issues.

Step 2: They design low-cost retrofit passive solutions to improve ventilation within the space

Step 3: By making some digital models (or physical models) they can test it on an online or on ground

Step 4 : Share the learnings and design with the community in Informal settlements.
