{"id":2693,"date":"2023-06-27T18:03:31","date_gmt":"2023-06-27T18:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fairconditioning.org\/fc-activity\/?post_type=activity&#038;p=2693"},"modified":"2023-06-27T18:03:31","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T18:03:31","slug":"epi-calculation-of-college-building","status":"publish","type":"activity","link":"https:\/\/fairconditioning.org\/fc-activity\/activity\/epi-calculation-of-college-building\/","title":{"rendered":"EPI Calculation of College Building"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-2\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Objective<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>To estimate the energy performance index (EPI) of the college building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Outcome<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will gain understanding on Environmental performance mapping and Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) guidelines for different typology of buildings and be mindful of it while designing the buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requirements<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Measuring tape (long), Plan of the institute, monthly electricity bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prerequisites<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>A conceptual knowledge of electrical energy consumption and Energy Performance Index (EPI).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Procedure<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 1: <\/em><\/strong>Identify the climatic zone of the city in which the institutional building is located.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 2:<\/em><\/strong> Obtain the monthly electricity bills&nbsp; of the college building for the past one year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 3: <\/em><\/strong>Determine each month\u2019s electricity consumption of the past year from the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 4:<\/em><\/strong> Add these values to get energy consumption of the past year (kWh\/yr).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 5: <\/em><\/strong>Measure the area (in m<sup>2<\/sup>) of the building by measuring length and breadth from the outside of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 6:<\/em><\/strong> Estimate the built-up area (in m<sup>2<\/sup>) for the entire building by multiplying a single floor area by the number of floors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 7:<\/em><\/strong> Estimate the EPI (in kWh\/m<sup>2<\/sup>\/yr) by dividing energy consumption per year (in kWh\/yr) with the building\u2019s built-up area (in m<sup>2<\/sup>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 8:<\/em><\/strong> Compare the EPI with the benchmark provided by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) for institutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 9:<\/em><\/strong> If<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>EPI<sub>building<\/sub> &gt; EPI<sub>benchmark<\/sub><sub><\/sub> : Building\u2019s energy performance is unsatisfactory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EPI<sub>building<\/sub> &lt; EPI<sub>benchmark<\/sub><sub><\/sub> : Building\u2019s energy performance is good<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sample Calculations<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 1:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>City : Pune<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Climatic Zone<sup>5<\/sup> : Warm &amp; Humid<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 2:<\/em><\/strong> Energy Consumption per year (kWh\/yr) = 1,790,000 kWh\/yr<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 3:<\/em><\/strong> Built-up Area of the Building (m<sup>2<\/sup>) = 10,000 m<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 4:<\/em><\/strong> Energy Performance Index (kWh\/m<sup>2<\/sup>-yr) = $$\\frac{\\:\\text{Energy Consumption per year (kWh\/yr)}}{\\:\\text{Built-up Area of the Building (m2)}}$$<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>= $$\\frac{\\:\\text{1,790,000}}{\\:\\text{10,000}}$$<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>= <\/em><\/strong>179 kWh\/m<sup>2<\/sup>-yr\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 5:<\/em><\/strong> EPI Benchmark for Institutes (For Warm &amp; Humid Climate Zone)<sup>6<\/sup> = 150 kWh\/m<sup>2<\/sup>-yr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Step 6:<\/em><\/strong> Since EPI<sub>building<\/sub> > EPI<sub>benchmark<\/sub>, the building performance is unsatisfactory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">References<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1qPO9xenEkUKHV_EwPOkUEAyJOBkycepJXsj0xkoUBHw\/edit?ts=5cbedfd5#heading=h.cc2vamx5g4a3\">Supplementary Notes Section: Energy Performance Index<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Objective To estimate the energy performance index (EPI) of the college building.
